Gary Mitchell


Gary Mitchell was born in Rathcoole, North Belfast in 1965. He has written extensively for radio, television, film and the stage. He won a BBC Radio 4 Young Playwrights Festival Award in 1990 and was awarded the Stewart Parker Playwrights Award in 1995. In 1998, his play, 'In a Little World of our Own', won the Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best New Play and in the same year he won the Belfast Drama Award for 'In a Little World of Our Own' and 'Sinking'. His work has also been produced at the Royal Court and Royal National Theatre, London, where he was appointed Writer-In-Residence in 1998. Gary Mitchell made international headlines in 2005 when he and his family were forced out of their North Belfast home by local loyalist paramilitaries. They now live at a secret location.
