Act one: The Slave Fields of King Durniak.<p> Act two: The Throne Hall of King Durniak.
Slaves await the death of the king's dog in the hope that they can have his bones for dinner. Among them is the overthrown King Argimenes, who initiates a revolt and succeeds in ousting his rival and regaining the throne. The dog,meanwhile, dies, and Argminenes orders it to be buried. The slaves onject, not fully comprehending that they are no longer subject to the oppressive regime of the previous king and that they can hope for something better to eat than the bones of a dead dog.
