Rutherford Mayne
The kitchen of John Murray in County Down, during the present day [1908].
The Drone was premiered as a two-act play. It was subsequently produced in an expanded three-act version in 1909. The printed version of the play which is available is the three-act version.
Widower John Murray, a farmer, lives with daughter Mary and his brother Daniel, who has spent years ostensibly inventing a mechanical apparatus to make them rich. Now, however, John is proposing to re-marry with Sarah, a wealthy, sharp and thrifty local spinster. The idea proves quite unpopular with John's household, and as Mary and Daniel determinedly set about preventing the impending marriage, it ultimately falls to Daniel, the 'drone', to save the day.
