Perry was born at Woodruff, Co Tipperary, in 1906, and educated at Cheltenham College. He made his professional acting dbut as Jack Chesney in Charlie's Aunt in 1928. John Gielgud offered to direct a play Perry had written in collaboration with Molly Keane (under her pen-name M.J. Farrell), who was a childhood friend and neighbour. The play was Spring Meeting (1938) and was followed by further collaborations with Keane: Treasure Hunt (1949) and Dazzling Prospect (1961).
