R J Ray (the pen-name of Robert J. Brophy) was a Cork-based journalist whose first job was writing for the Kilkenny People in 1890. He later wrote for the Cork Constitution, The Evening Mail, and was on the editorial staff of the Irish Independent. The realist nature of his plays led him to be considered by Yeats as one of the "Three Cork Dramatists", along with TC Murray and Lennox Robinson.
