St. John Greer Ervine

1883 - 1971

Born 1883 in Ballymacarret, East Belfast, he became manager of the Abbey Theatre in 1915 and resigned in 1916. He wrote several novels and served in the First World War; and served for a time as the Observer and Morning Post drama critic. Plays produced include Mixed Marriage (1911); The Magnanimous Lover (1912); John Ferguson (1915); The Lady of Belmont (1930); The First Mrs Fraser (1931); Boyd’s Shop (1936); and Friends and Relations (1941). Ervine also wrote biographies of Edward Carson, Wilde, Parnell, General Booth, G. B. Shaw, and William Craig and an autobiography, Some Impressions of My Elders (1922). He died in 1971.
