Thomas Carnduff

1886 - 1956

Born in Sandy Row, Belfast, in 1886, Thomas Carnduff worked at a variety of jobs, including at the shipyards, also serving as a sapper in the Royal Engineers during the First World War. He had two collections of poetry published in 1924 and 1932, which were republished in 1993 as Poverty Street. Carnduff wrote a number of plays, some of which found staging by the Belfast Repertory Company, including Workers (1932), Machinery (1933), Traitors (1934) and Castlereagh (1935). His Life and Writings appeared in 1994, edited by John Gray. He ended his working life as caretaker of the Linen Hall Library, Belfast.
