Born Maureen O'Farrell in Dublin, she was educated at Loreto Convent in St Stephen's Green. Later, at UCD, she was a leading member of the Dramatic Society. Her work appeared at the Abbey Theatre and Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, and the Lyric Theatre in Belfast. Her great success came with a musical, The Heart's A Wonder, an adaptation of Synge's The Playboy of the Western World, which she co-wrote with her sister, Nuala Mulcahy. Go Where Glory Waits Thee, a play about the life of Thomas Moore, was presented at the Gate and the Lyric Theatre in Belfast. Her musical about James Joyce and his wife Nora, Nora Barnacle, was critically acclaimed at the Dublin Theatre Festival.
