Martin McDonagh

1971 -

Martin McDonagh was born in Camberwell, London, to Irish parents. As a child, he spent his summers in the West of Ireland. His massively successful plays have been produced all over the world, including extensive runs on the West End and Broadway. His play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, won 4 Tony Awards in 1998. Further awards include the Critics Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright (The Beauty Queen of Leenane, 1996) and the Olivier Award for Best New Play (The Pillowman, 2003), as well as numerous Tony nominations. He also spent some time as resident playwright at the Royal National Theatre in London. In recent years McDonagh has dedicated himself to the medium of film, with his first film Six Shooter winning the Oscar for Best Short Live Action Film in 2005 and the subsequent feature-length In Bruges taking the BAFTA and the British Independent Film Award for Best Screenplay as well as the Irish Playwrights and Screenwriters Guild Award for Best Film Script in 2008. He lives in London.
