  The first part of the play is set in the fairground at Grein and the second is set in the Prater at Vienna, City of Illusion.

• Achoimre

  At the fairground at Grein, on the Danube, Ilya and Hildegard meet in the aftermath of World War II. For Ilya, the past is real, in that he lived through the experience of Tatenberg Camp. For Hildegard, the past is imaginary in that she was not present when her husband was court-martialled and shot on the Kalmuck Steppes, south of Stalingrad. The characters that haunt Hildegard's memory are reconstituted through the puppets she handles every day.
