Winifred M. Letts
A crumbling North Dublin residence, 1890.
Charles Caulfield, a gentleman of advanced years, tells his butler about a long-dead sweetheart whose diary has just come into his possession. The conversation is interrupted by the sudden appearance of an old acquaintance. A heated argument ensues as Caulfield accuses Buchanan of having once harboured feelings for the author of the diary and kissing her. Buchanan admits it and eventually has to reach for his pistol to defend himself. Before the two men can finish their duel, Caulfield drops dead from a heart attack.
