Dorothy Macardle

According to Cathy Leeney (' Irish Women Playwrights, 1900-1939': Peter Lang, 2010), the original manuscript for 'Dark Waters' has never been found. The same is true of many of Macardle's plays, possibly, as Leeney suggests, because her personal papers were destroyed by her younger brother after her death in 1958.
Oliver Carmichael is an invalid who gradually becomes obsessed with the prophecies of familial doom set down by a long-dead ancestor in his manuscripts. One day Oliver's daughter Una sees in her mirror the haunted face of a future lover who is destined to cause her pain...
