    The poet James Clarence Mangan comes to a doss house in Dublin at the height of a cholera epidemic during the famine. He falls into a opium-drugged dream which replays the course of his own life - his escape from a bullying father, his love for his pupil Catherine Hayes and his fall into alcoholism.
