In January 1822, Shelley and his second wife Mary and their child Percy Florence were living in a flat in Pisa; their friends Captain and Mrs. Williams, with their two children, lived in a flat in the same house. Lord Byron was also in Pisa. Mary Shelley's half-sister, Claire Claremont, the mother of Byron's child Allegra, was living in Florence. Allegra, aged five, was in a convent at Bagnacavallo. Edward John Trelawny, a sailor and friend of Williams, came to join the circle in Pisa. He had a sailing boat built for Shelley and Williams, who were looking forward to spending the summer by the sea.
