Kevin O'Connor
J.F. Byrne and Vincent Cosgrave were fellow students of James Joyce at University College, Dublin. From them both, Joyce got different things - from Byrne a friendly, if sceptical audience for his theories and from Cosgrave the conspiratorial companionship of visits to the brothel and pub. In turn, Joyce was to give them life beyond their natural span as models for the literary creations of Cranley and Lynch in his writings. But as the characters of Cranley and Lynch became indented upon the minds of generations of readers around the world, what of the original pair left behind in Dublin?
