Terence J. MacSwiney

1879 - 1920

Born in Cork, MacSwiney was a founder member of the Cork Celtic Literary Society in 1901. In 1908, he founded the Cork Dramatic Society with Daniel Corkery, for which he wrote several plays. He was a driving force behind the foundation of the Irish Volunteers in 1913. He was elected to the First Dail for mid-Cork. MacSwiney was elected Lord Mayor of Cork in March 1920, but was arrested under the Defence of the Realm Act in August 1920 and sentenced to 2 years in prison. He died in Brixton Jail while on hunger strike.
