Constantine Fitzgibbon

1919 - 1983

Robert Louis Constantine Lee-Dillon Fitzgibbon was born in Massachusetts. His father was American, his mother Northern Irish. Educated in Munich, at the Sorbonne and Oxford, he served in both the British and US armies during the Second World War. He taught briefly in Bermuda, before settling in England. He moved to Ireland in 1965, living there for the rest of his life, and becoming a citizen. His novels include When the Kissing Had to Stop (1960) and High Heroic (1969), about the life of Michael Collins. His life of Eamon De Valera was published in 1973. His play, The Devil at Work, was produced by the Abbey in 1971.
