With old age advancing rapidly, Jenny Lavelle has retreated to the familiar surroundings of her kitchen, the only room she inhabits in her rambling Dublin 4 residence. The loss of Nancy, her best friend and neighbour for fifty years has left Jenny feeling bereft. It is 2007, the country is firmly in the grip of the Celtic Tiger but cracks are beginning to appear. Jenny's son Des is expanding his business interests and needs his mother to sell the family home so he can cash in on the proceeds. With her independence under threat, Jenny decides to hide her weakening heart condition from her son for fear he will bully her into leaving the house. Jenny becomes friendly with Paula, the young woman who has moved into Nancy's house. Paula Harte is married to one of the wealthiest men in the country and seems to live a charmed life, but Jenny senses that all is not well with her new neighbour. As a friendship develops between the two women it becomes apparent that Paula is deeply unhappy. Jenny is reminded of the life she once endured, but with age has come a new courage and wisdom - and a chance to put things right.
