Scene: The kitchen of Kinnehalla Lodge, County Down. Time: During the "Trouble".
It is the night before the marriage of Piers Coyne, the Unionist holder of Kinnehalla Lodge. Three people sitting round the fire in a County Down kitchen and ponder the tragedy which has befallen the Coyne family down the generations. Centuries earlier, his ancestors had forced an Irish chieftain’s red-haired daughter into an unwilling strategic marriage, with tragic consequences. Now, Piers Coyne has fallen for a red-haired descendent of that same chieftain – and now, as then, shots will ring out on the eve of the wedding.
