A village near Clonmel in 1895.
A note to the published script states that: "The play is based very loosely on events which took place in a village near Clonmel in 1895."
When Michael's young wife Bridget does not have a child, he begins to suspect that she is possessed. Together with neighbours also suspicious that she is a changeling and capable of witchcraft, he decides she must go through a test of fire in the hope that his real wife will be returned to him. Fear and tension mount, and ultimately, tragedy results for the couple.
