Daniel McKnight is a County Down fisherman and confirmed bachelor. As a young man, he had been responsible for introducing his neighbour, Morgan, to his future wife, eventually resulting in a most unhappy marriage. Word comes from America that Morgan, long emigrated, has died and left Dan a bequest of five thousand pounds on the provision that he marry his widow. If either refuses, the money is to go to the other. Dan, also being pursued by local women Nora McConville and Mrs Grant, finds life getting unbearably complicated for a Lone Man. Finally, he receives word that the widow will forfeit the money rather than marry again, and he is much relieved. But can he really trust the news?
