John Fitzpatrick, a young professor, was once infatuated with a musical comedy actress Lola Fulton. Now Lola is blackmailing him by demanding a thousand pounds for a package of indiscreet love letters he wrote to her at the height of his passion. Fitzpatrick is in a fix: he cannot pay, as he needs the money to support his aged mother. Arriving at Fitzpatrick's rooms to force him to cough up, Lola meets his mother, an elderly Connaught peasant woman. While Lola waits, she hears her the story of the family's difficult life, and is so touched by the tale of eviction, poverty, suffering and disappointments, that she decides to burn the letters and leave Fitzpatrick in peace.
