Mat Tumulty, a shoemaker in the Ulster country town of Tullybeg, finds his dog and goat shot dead. Politician Mr. Taggart, whose grandfather fought at Dolly's Brae and "would sooner have a crisis than his dinner", deems the deed to be black party work. With intrepid determination, he sets out to solve the animal murder mystery, and mayhem and comedy results.
