A play about a loveless marriage between gloomy businessman Robert Grainger and his former employee Mary Crichton. Mary lives a life of drudgery, as Grainger and his daughter Eve make her life a misery. She endures it, unable to bear the thought of returning to life as a poor wage-earner. When her husband finds her in the company of Hugh Rowan, a former close companion, Mary realises that she is utterly incompatible to her husband and resolves to leave him.
