The Hollow in the Sand is the story of five lecturers, who, in one evening set out the history of civilisation, while at the same time portraying the life of a young French mathematician Evariste Galois, who died in 19th-century revolutionary France. As the evening progresses, the absurd trials and tribulations of the lecturers develop alongside the comic-tragic demise of the young mathematician. The lecturers bring the audience on an historical tour from ancient Babylon through Greece and ancient Rome, through the Dark Ages to the time of Copernicus and Galileo, up as far as Evariste Galois himself where the protagonist rushes against time to finish his work before facing a fatal duel early the next day.
