Educated at Midleton College and TCD, where he twice won the Vice-Chancellor’s prizes for English prose and verse, White joined the Irish Times on graduation in 1942, was London editor 1946–52 and features and literary editor 1952–61. He became head of public affairs in RTE in 1961, controller of television programmes in 1974, and then head of resources until his death in 1980. Wrote radio scripts, three novels, two plays, and Minority Report (1975), a study of the place of Protestants in the south of Ireland. His play The Last Eleven won the Irish Life Drama Award of 1967 and was produced at the Abbey Theatre in 1968.
