    The play starts with the return to the village of Henry Hynde, ten years after having walked out on his pregnant girlfriend, Maggie Cather. He has decided to return to 'save her' from a life of sin, and to make a 'respectable' woman of her once more. When he proposes,however,Maggie him on the grounds that he would never see her as his equal.
