The play opens with Cuchulain in a slumber from which his wife Emer is unable to wake him. The Fand, the fairy goddess, appears and falls in love with Cuchulain, who reciprocates. Emer realises that Cuchulain no longer favours her while Fand's husband, the Storm God, then appears to reclaim his wife.
