The action of the play takes place in Mame Fadden's home and along the quays of a provincial city in the present(1971).
A woman is torn between repairing her marriage and leading a life of freedom on the streets. Unsure whether she or her family is right, Mame's frustration mounts as her husband becomes colder and her sons more indifferent.
